Thedarkener: humor me for a moment. How can we be free of conditioning that has already taken place? And isn't it possible that we were conditioned to want to be free of that conditioning? This is where I see the 'mental freedom' as somewhat meaningless.

Mental freedom isn't meaningless if it's what you *want*.. If you think about it in a very raw form, disregarding your entire life experience so far, would you rather be free to experience and "dooooo" (like you said to Ian) or would you like to be told what to do and experience? We're meant to be free, like the animals we are. Free to experience and think and evolve.

This is a false dichotomy, in my opinion. A) I don't know WHY I want things and B) I'm never free from the desire to interact with others (AKA society).

You don't have to know why you want things if we're drilling down this far, it's irrelevant. Fact is that sometimes, at least for me, I *do* desire the freedom to NOT interact with others. And I do (not). Sorry, that's confusing. Anyway, what you're talking about is instinct, which I honestly don't know if you can change or not.

Do you think, you could think yourself free if you were locked up in solitary confinement for an indefinite period? I think freedom is an illusion.

If "think yourself free" means physically leaving solitary confinement, then... what do you think. (no question mark) What you *can* do is be free mentally. Anyone can be mentally free, it is a matter of committing to it and practicing it. I have found this through meditation, and I went from being angry and pessimistic 90% of the time to about 10% of the time.

i agree..thanks for expanding.. finding peace, contentment and ultimately "freedom" is a matter of looking inward I believe..however, too many people are not in a state of mind to recognize or open up to our potential as human beings. Its our busy and over-indulging society that holds many back.

Agreed as well. What I can see realistically is the gradual leaning toward the aspects of community and personal growth (and away from self-centeredness). To say I see an infant start to grow slowly wouldn't be a lie on my part.. but it will be a sharp-turned growth indeed.
