The funny thing is, he's got a point. Nice hair, too. From the 1968 Tony Palmer documentary "All My Loving".

Burgess grew up in the early half of the 20th century when intellectual accomplishment and the pursuit of knowledge was not something to be ashamed of. Now, because of the boom in pop culture after the second world war, ignorance is 'cool'. everything becomes a rehash of what has gone before, as the pop culture monster eats itself.

Excellent! Thank you very much for posting it. Burgess was indeed a remarkable writer, one of the twentieth century's greats. It is fascinating to see and hear him speak. Is it possible to watch more of this and other interviews?

Classic Burgess - pugnacious, pompous (though self-parodically) and, as ever, just plain right. Many years later he did, in fact, give a more or less positive review of The Beatles Songbook for The Observer. I'm still scanning the literary horizon for someone with his sheer breadth of talent - novelist, critic, screenwriter, musician and above all teacher. Good job I'm not holding my breath. RIP.

I'm not sure if he loved the sound of his own voice or if he just liked it a lot

Burgess is a brilliant writer. He is so right on youth. Great novelist. He wrote over 40 books, and didn't start until his late 30's.

He was a much-maligned and underrated genius. Decades ahead of his time too. I know there is no God because Burgess died while Frederick Forsyth is still alive and peddling his shit prose and ultra-right wing opinions around the place. Tosser.
