Description:

this is a challenge. don't watch this video if you arn't ready look at the issue differently. racism is the wrong word. to talk about racism is to limit your scope to a specific type of prejudice. you can judge someone by a number of different superficial traits and skin color is only one of them. gender, religion and sexual preferences are others. you can judge someone by the clothes they wear, the family members they have or whatever. these things all have little impact on the content of character. however, you should always remember that you act as an ambassador to any group that someone else can place you in. to a degree, you are a representative of your race, gender, age and sexual preference. this is not logical but it is practical and must be respected. there have been times when certain groups of people have been forced to form communities to protect themselves and offer support to eachother. the african american community, the jewish community, the gay community. but when do these groups cease to be helpful and begin to be a hinderance? for example, white people don't need a community. personaly, i'm glad that we don't have white pride month or white pride parades because then i'd be grouped together with a bunch of people i don't really want to be grouped together with. the problem is that while we enjoy the saftey and secuity that comes with belonging to a community, we also want the privilage of being an individual without taking on the responsability of maintaining an external idenity. there are two seperate kinds of prejudice (or racism). one we are very familiar with. it's externaly imposed racism. when someone looks at you and judges you by the group you represent, that is racism. the second kindof racism is more subtle because it's internaly imposed. when you modify your own behavior to better fit in with your group, you are commiting racism against yourself. expanded a bit, every time you make lifestyle changes, pick out music or shop for clothes or get a job and your affiliation to a social group infuences your decision, you are commiting racism against yourself. is that too bold? to a lesser degree, do you alter your interists based on your friends or do you pick your friends based on pre-existing shared interists? anyhow. so as a thought experament i'd like to try something. if science could develop a pill to cure you of your racial minority status (so if you are black or asian or whatever, it would just make you 'neuteral' or whatever) would you take it? after all, these qualities are only skin deep and superficial. they have nothing to do with your personality or your individuality. so why wouldn't you just shed your race and berid of it?

i appreciate your commentary but in this video, i'm not talking about that. granted, the argument might have validity but here i am talking about people putting limits on themselves based on their own race.

Well today we have whites and asians not being accepted to schools because of their pigmentation. If you want to read about this check out the book "The End of Racism" by Dinesh D'Souza.

i am not sure about the affirmative action commentary but i agree with the patrick part. diversity is such a novelty these days. <hick accent> hey mom lets invite the negros... i mean african americans in for supper so we can get some worldly education! and don't worry about using the fine china because these fine folks dont have any reason to resent us </hick accent>

Unfortunately the Civil Rights Movement has taken a wrong turn. Instead of being color blind today we lower standards for minorities and have race based preferences. Affirmative action is just another word for if your white we won't hire you. Deval Patrick is the biggest racist ever. He has busses take kids to schools far away from them for diversity. Why not just forget about skin color when bringing kids to school?

sorry that is a stupid comment. I like what you have to say about committing prejudice against ourselves. its like saying, "no, what's really inside of you is worthless. try to act more like group X, only then will you gain any value." which is bullshit.

I think Dr. Seuss made a book about what would happen if you could remove your minority status. There was a machine that took stars off of people, and another that put them on. And in the middle was the man who could make it happen, collecting all the money. The trick is to be comfortable in your own identity, instead of depending upon others for clues as to who you are. It's all relative any way.

without a doubt, i believe it is the internal type of prejudice. when someone says 'oh i suck at this or i'm good at that' and their reasoning is based on their social group then they are committing prejudice against themself and i don't think anybody really thinks twice about that kind of stuff.
