Description:
US involvement in Vietnam through 'Gimme Shelter' by The Rolling Stones. Historic Event Background: So it all started a long time ago... Vietnam was governed by the French up until WWII, when it was taken over by Japan. When Japan was defeated, Vietnam declared itself an independent country. At first France resented, but finally let them go. Vietnam was then split into two, the top Communist and the bottom Democratic. This was only temporary, though, as soon there would be elections to see which party would win, but it was obvious that Communism was favored here. So, the elections never happened because Diem (the then-ruler of the South-Vietnam Democracy) backed out. So the US was rather annoyed by this (we didn't particualary like Communists at the time) and had the excuse later that a Destroyer patrolling around the area had been hit. Of course, it did not take long before we went to war. This was the longest war in American history resulting in nearly 60,000 US soldier deaths, and over one million Vietnamese deaths. When the war became ugly, the new president at the time (Nixon) started 'Vietnamization', which meant that we would slowly pull troops out of Vietnam. Eventually, we withdrew and South Vietnam fell to communism. Music Background: The Rolling Stones, are, basically, a rock band. This song came out during Vietnam, and there's almost no doubting that it refers to this in the lyrics ('War, children,/is just a shot away,/is just a shot away,'). This interesting song (with an interesting intro) never fails at amusing me. The Rolling Stones did many odd things in their music, but this is really what made it interesting. This is also the first track off of their album, 'Let It Bleed'. Mentionable: Notice the short clips of President Lyndon B. Johnson (the one who got us most involved in Vietnam), Ho Chi Minh, and President Nixon. Also, at about 2:43, that short clip is of the Kent State Protest, in which four students were killed by the National guard. |
