Description:

The Veil has been always been so alluring, so mysterious. Is the Veil spiritual...or erotic? Does it signify modesty...or oppression? In the Muslim world, the hijab -- or the "Veil," as it's referred to in the West -- may be a simple headscarf, or cover a woman from head to toe. But whatever its form, the veil has taken on a multitude of meanings -- perhaps much more than was ever intended. Today, the veil carries a strong political message and raises feminist and cross cultural issues. In this post 9/11 era, with the spotlight on the Middle East and Islam, it's a symbol that can't be ignored. And if we in the West ever hope to understand the Muslim world, peeking behind that Veil will unveil a culture that has been so dark and mysterious to most of us. It's time to look behind that Veil, to reveal what it means to the women who wear it, and to the men who see it. It's time to explore what it means to the culture of the Middle East, and to a post 9/11 Western society. Do the women who wear the Veil choose to? Or because they are forced to? Behind each Veil, perhaps, is a different answer: Today, there is a new kind of woman wearing the Veil. It's an obvious phenomenon on the rise in the past decade. In non-Muslim countries -- in Europe, Canada, and the US, young women who might be more prone to sporting tattoos and I-pod earpieces, are donning the veil in increasing numbers. Is it just for spiritual or religious reasons? ... . Or a form of non-violent defiance to the new system and the norm..... Or, is it about submission? -PART ONE- "THE VEIL DIARIES" The Veil Diaries will take us inside the lives of 5 young Muslim women in America today. As they open their personal diaries and speak out for the first time, they will share their most intimate feelings, daily struggles and personal lives, shedding light on this dark and often misunderstood subject.

I don't totally agree with that, but it's an interesting thought though!

To say that hijab is to wear a veil to cover the hair is INCORRECT, hijab is modesty in dress and in behavior. Not just over the head, but also clothing that does not reveal the shape of the body in public. If you are a Muslim woman and you say that you choose not to observe the hijab then you what you are saying is that you choose to disobey your LORD We lose the essence of Islam when we make statements like this because to be a Muslim is to willingly submit to the will of God

I don't find the story about Saudi's letting girls burn for not covering very believable, BUT that's not really the issue. You cannot blame the religion of Islam for such actions. Hijab, covering NOT just your hair but the rest of your body in a modest way, IS mandatory and stated in the Quran. Of course people should not be forced by other people to cover if they don't want to; it is between the person and Allah. BUT it IS mandatory...

So, if it's mandatory, AND their are virtue police in saudi arabia to enforce it, you still say that it's OK not to cover?

I'm doing a survey. What is the most beautiful Muslim country to live in the total way of life that some say Islam is?

Since this is a documentary project, the quest for bringing out the truth is an ethical guideline that will maintain my objective approach in telling the story. Thanks for commenting and I look forward to any feedback as I'm finalizing this.

I am Muslim and I cover, but I don't think the Saudi police should force anyone to cover because that beats the purpose: if you're doing it by force and not in the name of God, then you're doing it for nothing...

Also, when you look at the world today, there is no such thing as a Muslim country; no country is even close to being that well organized :)) countries like Saudi Arabia go too far with their rules, but on the other hand, you have "Muslim countries" like Turkey where they ban wearing the headscarf to make the country a more "secular" one... Then you have countries like the U.S. that give you all the freedom you need to practice your religion BUT the general public treats you badly...

When I saw the woman with the black full-body veil, my first thought was "ooh, a ninja!" And I can't decide if that's a bad thing or not...
