petuniabelle650 ::: Favorites 2007-07-23 13:14:54 Here in the US, people think Southerners are dumb and on TV a lot of times a Southern character is played as a rednecked idiot. There's a TV show now that I hope you will get over there called "The Closer" where the lead character is a Southern woman and she's brilliant. I can't even say how this thrilled me to see them show a Southerner as the smartest one in the room! __________________________________________________
brabon ::: Favorites 2006-11-25 02:04:50 midwest english is highly accented...the type of accents they put on tv are the california accent...and that is the "non accented" english...even though if you listen closely there is an accent there __________________________________________________
mgpapas ::: Favorites 2006-10-08 18:09:16 That prejudice if you want to call it that extends to almost any occupation. You could be the best attorney in the world but if you walked into a courtroom in the Midwest, west, or northeast and spoke like Jed Clampett from the Beverly Hillbillies you would have zero credibility. Likewise if you were applying for a job in any sort of professional field having a heavy regional accent would make it much less likely you would be hired. __________________________________________________
mgpapas ::: Favorites 2006-10-08 18:00:12 In the US no matter where you go or how heavy the accent is among the regions population the local news broadcasters speak in what would be considered Midwest or non-accented American English. It's because they all aspire to work for networks where that is a requirement and also due to the fact that accents are considered to be being indicative of a lack of intelligence or education. No network will pick up a local story for national broadcast when the reporter starts with "howdy y'all". __________________________________________________ |
