I want it too . I'll give you guyz my HV circuit . I made it using a ballast coil .

Yes, and use MOV (metal-oxide Varistor) as a add-in protection, it will help halting back EMF voltage. Trust me, I have done that before - I even used it for X-ray generation and laser pumping (OOhh, my favorite, Nitrogen laser! It's actually easier to build, anyways.)

Be sure to use blocking diodes in the sensitive areas of your circuit.

grab an old stereo and use the transformer.... Do the same thing with it, If you want to have fun get a couple of friends and stand in a circle and complete a circuit with 2 people holding one wire on each end. Everyone feels the zap. Kinda like the old boxes @ disneyland..lol

I just had a 555 oscillator driving an NPN transistor between saturation and cutoff, with the primary of the ignition connected between the positive supply and the collector of the transistor. The problem I had was that the back EMF from the coil would forward bias the collector-base junction and feed back into the 555 timer burning it out. At least that's what I suspect was happening. It would probably work better if I used a MOSFET which I plan to try when I get a spare moment.
